Manaus Report – Dr. Mayara proposes creating a register of ‘Genetic Counseling in Amazonas’

Bill No. 196/2024, authored by state deputy Dr. Mayara Pinheiro Reis (Republicans), provides guidelines for the creation of the “Genetic Counseling” (AG) registry. One of the objectives of the standard is the construction of a database to adapt the actions of the National Policy for Comprehensive Care for People with Rare Diseases in the State of Amazonas.

In addition to building a database, the registry also aims to guide public policies, map hereditary diseases, encourage pre-conception consultations, promote transparency and share information. Through it, it is possible to check the probability of a genetic disease occurring in a family, and with this probability, guide couples who are thinking about having children, but have a high possibility of transmitting some pathology or malformation.

For the author of the PL, avoiding pregnancy losses should be a concern for the State. Mayara believes that the proposal is fundamental for the formation of new families, in a healthy way.

“With the loss of a child, the family structure is shaken in several ways and we know that this can be avoided if the State has a sensitive eye and takes care of the problem at its base, so that these couples undergo tests and exams that can prevent hereditary diseases, risks and pregnancy losses. I hope that the AG registry is implemented, as most people are largely unaware of the medical condition they have. We need to talk about this method and make it available to the population”, explained Dr. Mayara.

According to the project, despite not being cultural, pre-conception consultation, part of genetic counseling, is an instrument for reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. Another benefit of genetic counseling is the prevention of mortality by enabling preventive treatment of changes in genesis associated with spontaneous abortions before three months of pregnancy.

The service must be developed in health units with a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary team with doctors, biologists, psychologists, social workers, among others. To make an appointment, a clinical referral is required.

The implementation of genetic counseling and its registration will be made possible by the Executive Branch, if the project is approved and sanctioned. The use of your data for any type of demographic control will be prohibited.
