One astronomical phenomenon was recorded in the sky of Santa Catarina, captured by a monitoring camera in Monte Castelo, in the north of the state. Popularly known as “shooting star”, the meteor was visible for approximately 4 seconds, culminating in a small explosion. The local astronomer estimates that the event occurred over Joinville, the most populous city in the northern region of Santa Catarina. Due to the high altitude at which meteors typically occur, it is possible that the phenomenon was also visible in neighboring states.
What are meteors?
According to Justino, a meteor is a luminous phenomenon caused by the entry of any solid object into the Earth’s atmosphere. Generally, these objects are meteoroids, rocks up to one meter in diameter. If the object is larger than one meter, it is called an asteroid. Meteorites are rocks that survive atmospheric entry and reach the ground.
The sudden increase in brightness observed at the end of the meteor’s path indicates an explosion, as explained by amateur astronomer Jocimar Justino.
The image of the phenomenon was captured at 9:26 pm on Monday (1st) by the cameras of the Brazilian Meteor Monitoring Network (BRAMON), an open and collaborative organization made up of volunteers, including Justino.
