The uncertainty regarding the municipal elections in Mato Grosso do Sul “cracked” the PL with its main leaders fighting over the pre-candidacies, mainly in Campo Grande, the largest electoral college in the State, but not much different from what happens in Dourados and other municipalities in the interior.

However, the situation got out of control even in the Capital, where, to date, the PL still does not have a definition on who will be the party’s pre-candidate for mayor, precisely in the municipality that concentrates the largest number of Bolsonarists in the State.

From the end of last year until now, at least five names have been elevated to the category of pre-candidates for mayor of Campo Grande with the endorsement of former President of the Republic Jair Messias Bolsonaro, deputies Marcos Pollon, Coronel David and João Henrique Catan and former deputies Capitão Contar and Rafael Tavares.

Of the five, only three are still, theoretically, in the running, namely state deputy João Henrique Catan and former state deputies Rafael Tavares and Capitão Contar, the latter of whom has not yet left the PRTB to join the PL, whose Deadline ends next Saturday.

Furthermore, to finish making the situation even more complicated, there is a great possibility that the PL will form an alliance with the PP to support the re-election of the current mayor Adriane Lopes, throwing aside all the negotiations of the main right-wing party to have its own candidacy in the Capital.

The result of all this is that the party in Mato Grosso do Sul is without a defined direction, because, while the state president, federal deputy Marcos Pollon, and the municipal president, senator’s substitute Tenente Portela, defend their own pre-candidacy , led by Rafael Tavares, another wing believes it is better for the party to support the re-election of Adriane Lopes.

A third wing wants to see João Henrique Catan as a pre-candidate, while a fourth wing works for Captain Contar, who went to the second round in the election for governor of Mato Grosso do Sul in 2022, when he was defeated by Eduardo Riedel (PSDB), be the pre-candidate, as they consider him the best option on the right.

There is still Colonel David’s group, who, despite being a root Bolsonaro supporter, would no longer be putting up with the lack of northern PL and, as a result, would be seriously considering migrating to another right-wing party, including on this list the Republicans, of the deputy state Antonio Cruz, the PP, by senator Tereza Cristina, and even the new acronym PRD, the party of former senator Delcídio do Amaral and which was born from the merger of PTB with Patriota.

What is certain is that the fragmented PL is “cracked” into several parts and each of them tries to pull the heat on its own sardine, leaving aside party unity and showing the individual interests of each group, weakening the right precisely in the most Bolsonarist city of State.

NATIONAL EXECUTIVE

Due to the imbroglio that the PL situation in the Capital became, the State Post Office He contacted the national president of the party, Valdemar Costa Neto, and he confirmed to the reporter that the decision on whether or not the party should have its own candidacy for mayor of Campo Grande rests with the state president of the party, federal deputy Marcos Pollon.

“The person who will resolve Campo Grande is President Pollon,” Valdemar Costa Neto told the reporter, remembering, however, that former President of the Republic Jair Messias Bolsonaro will have the right to veto the issue due to his connection with the State.

In practice, the national president of the PL transferred all responsibility to Marcos Pollon regarding the possibility or not of the party having its own candidacy for mayor of the Capital, as it was commented that the party could support the re-election of mayor Adriane Lopes.

Contacted by Correio do Estado, the state president of the PL confirmed that the party will have its own candidacy and, for now, the names placed internally are those of state deputy João Henrique Catan and former state deputy Rafael Tavares.

Furthermore, it is still possible that former state deputy Capitão Contar could be a third party name to run for mayor of Campo Grande, simply by joining the PL within the deadline stipulated by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
