According to the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), an environmental emergency situation occurs when a natural disaster or human error creates a threat to the environment or public health. The agency says that, in these cases, it is necessary to adopt measures to reverse this condition.
Although the actions are a shared responsibility between the federated entities, as provided for in the Constitution, Ibama maintains preventive initiatives – through Prevfogo – aligned with fire monitoring data and fire areas in the country.
A week ago, the government of Mato Grosso decreed extended deadlines for the prohibitive period for the use of fire in 2024. In the Amazon and Cerrado, the use of fire is prohibited between the 1st of July and the 30th of November, and in the Pantanal, between the 1st of July and December 31st.
The measure took into account the climate changes predicted for this year and established rigor in the fight against forest fires. The decree also authorized the hiring of firefighters to work alongside firefighters to fight forest fires.
According to Decree No. 827/2024, an environmental emergency situation is determined between March and October in the Northeast, North and Southeast mesoregions, which encompass the Amazon biome; between April and November in the Southwest, where the Pantanal is located; and between the months of May and December in the Center-South of the State, where the Cerrado is located.
