After the rescue, the elderly woman, whose name was not released, received immediate medical attention and was taken to the Long-Term Institution “Casa do Pobre Santo Antônio”, where she will receive the necessary care for her physical and mental recovery. The DPE/AL’s action was quick and decisive, with Public Defender João Augusto Sinhorin closely following the entire process.
The involvement of the Public Defender’s Office was essential to guarantee the safety and well-being of the elderly woman. Through a Public Civil Action (ACP) filed during the judicial shift, the request to remove the elderly woman from her home and place her in a suitable institution was promptly granted by the Judiciary, demonstrating the effectiveness of the measures taken.
Furthermore, the elderly woman’s health was also assessed by municipal health professionals, who found that she had not received adequate follow-up for more than a year due to the absence of family members. Surprisingly, the elderly woman’s vaccination against COVID and Influenza was not up to date, which highlights the importance of the Public Defender’s role in rescuing and guaranteeing basic rights.
DPE/AL will continue to closely monitor the case, ensuring that the elderly woman receives all the necessary support in terms of social, psychological and health assistance. The operation to rescue this elderly woman serves as an alert to the importance of reporting and preventive actions in situations of abandonment and neglect of the elderly, reinforcing the need for protection and care for the most vulnerable in our society.
