Practices for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector will be discussed in the South Brazilian Symposium ABC+ Low Carbon Emission Agriculture, organized by the State Management Groups of Santa Catarina, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, together with the State Secretariat for Agriculture and Livestock and the Rural Research and Extension Company of Santa Catarina – Epagri. Registration is open for the event, which will be held at the Federation of Industries of the State of Santa Catarina (Fiesc), in Florianópolis, on May 3.

The Symposium will debate the ABC+ state plans, the 2030 targets for low carbon emissions in southern Brazil, successful experiences in relation to the topic, combating climate change due to gas emissions, in addition to technical explanations of the sector. The event will feature lectures by renowned experts in the field, interactive workshops and networking with leaders in the field. Entries can be made by the site: sulbraabc.com.br.

Brazil is one of the world leaders in low-carbon agriculture and the South region stands out in the adoption of ABC technologies. The objective of the Plan is to bring more sustainable practices to climate change, always strengthening competitiveness and consolidating Santa Catarina as a reference in low carbon emissions. An example of this work are investments in pasture management and recovery, implementation of perennial pastures, soil and water conservation, management of animal production waste, planted forests and integrated systems.

According to the coordinator of the State Management Group of the ABC+ SC Plan, Humberto Bicca Neto, the objective of the Symposium is to plan and demonstrate actions to adopt sustainable production technologies, which correspond to commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector in southern Brazil. “We increasingly seek to collaborate and produce sustainable techniques to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, aiming to adopt better practices not only in mitigation, but also resilience and adaptation of agriculture in the face of climate change”, says the coordinator of the ABC+ Plan SC.

For the Secretary of State for Agriculture and Livestock, Valdir Colatto, Santa Catarina wants to become an agro-environmental reference, basing its food and forestry production on sustainable bases. “We created a plan that respects the peculiarities and reality of Santa Catarina to make our agriculture even more sustainable. We will demonstrate the leading role of rural producers in Santa Catarina, who combine food production and environmental preservation. We are already an international reference in animal and plant health, now we are looking for a new competitive advantage, with sustainable development”, highlights the secretary.

In Santa Catarina – The ABC+SC Low Carbon Emission Agriculture Plan, implemented a year ago by the State Secretariat for Agriculture and Livestock (SAR), in partnership with related sectors and Government bodies, aims to minimize greenhouse gas emissions (GEE). In Santa Catarina, the estimate is that the ABC+ SC Plan has already reached 14% of the target expected by 2030, with the implementation of technologies foreseen in the Plan in more than 106 thousand hectares. The project intends to generate significant potential for mitigating carbon emissions, as well as envisaging the dissemination of technologies throughout Santa Catarina’s agriculture, with the training of 70 thousand producers.
