People serving sentences or provisional measures in a closed or semi-open regime in Mato Grosso do Sul will be entitled to R$ 17.73 each, to purchase medicines or pay for pharmaceutical assistance actions in state prisons.

The value represents the investment per prisoner in one year. Data from Agepen (State Penitentiary System Administration Agency), computed up to February 29, show that there were 20,171 people incarcerated on that date. Therefore, considering this prison mass, the total investment for prison pharmacies could be R$357,600.

The investment value is the same as last year and was set by resolution published this Monday (1st) in the Official State Gazette.

It will be passed directly by the Ministry of Health to the city halls of the cities where the prisoners live, as long as they have adhered to the National Policy for Comprehensive Health Care for People Deprived of Liberty in the Prison System. If one is not part of the policy, the SES (State Health Department) will purchase and allocate the medicines to prisons.

The medicines to be purchased will have to be in the Rename (National List of Essential Medicines) of the SUS.

Also according to Agepen, there are currently 33 basic health units in operation to serve the prisoner population. In addition to medicines, they have teams of doctors and professionals from other areas to assist inmates. The total number of prison units in the State is currently 39.
