Pomerode, in the Itajaí Valley, transforms itself every year into the land of Easter by keeping the German tradition alive through the Osterfest.

The event, considered the largest of its kind in Brazil by the city of Santa Catarina, attracts visitors from different parts of the country. Among the attractions is the largest decorated Easter egg in the world, measuring 16 meters high, according to the municipality.

This year, the egg was painted with a representation of a half-timbered house, a tribute to the Germanic construction technique that is part of the region’s history. The choice coincides with the celebration of 200 years of German immigration to Brazil.

The party began on March 8th and continues until this Sunday (31st). Since its opening, there have been more than 20 attractions at the city’s Cultural Center.

In addition to the giant egg, the party features Osterbaum, a tree decorated with 85,000 eggshells.

Depending on the organization of the event, over time, the tradition acquired Christian meaning. The branches came to symbolize Jesus’ death and suffering, while the colored eggs came to represent the joy of the resurrection. The empty shells of the eggs refer to resurrection and renewal.
