Small service and construction businesses are the biggest employers in January

During the month of January, Sergipe was the third largest generator of jobs in micro and small companies (MSEs) in the Northeast. Every month, Sebrae receives numbers on layoffs and admissions to formal work from each federative unit in the country, through the General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons (Caged), and, with this data, prepares a report. The latest data shows that small businesses in Sergipe were responsible for generating 908 jobs in the first month of 2024, behind only Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba.

The report is based on the calculation of the net balance of formal jobs, the result of the subtraction between admissions and dismissals in that period determined by the research. This calculation indicates that the numbers for January 2024 are higher than those for the same month in 2023, of 712 jobs, and also higher than those for medium and large companies, which recorded a negative number of -278. The main driver of this result is the services sector – the MSEs in this sector presented a balance of 524 jobs created – and was followed by construction, with 364 and the manufacturing industry, with 114.

Data relating to MSEs, over the last three years, has resulted in a positive balance of job creation, which is more volatile when it comes to the numbers of large and medium-sized companies, where the balances vary more between negative and positive. , according to statistician Raphael Matos, analyst at the Strategic Management Unit at Sebrae/SE.

“When we talk about micro and small businesses, we notice a constant number of positive balances, with this balance becoming increasingly higher. This demonstrates the importance of small businesses in the economy, as, in addition to being 95% of companies in Sergipe, they end up generating more jobs, on average and by historical series, than medium and large companies”, he concluded.

Still according to the analysis, some economic activities stood out for presenting the best numbers, when it comes to micro and small companies. They are as follows: construction of buildings, with 230; restaurants and other food and beverage service establishments, 141; development of custom computer programs, 106; urbanization works (streets, squares and sidewalks), 67; and specialized services for construction, 45.
