The rice harvest in Rio Grande do Sul, which continued without setbacks until March 20th, was abruptly interrupted by the intense rainfall that occurred in the early hours of March 21st. According to the Economic Information released by Emater/RS-Ascar this Thursday (28/03), operations were suspended until 23/03, being resumed only after the rains dissipated and temperatures rose.

It is estimated that around 25% of the cultivation area has already been harvested, while 50% of the crops are in the maturation phase and the remaining 25% are in grain filling. Reports indicate the occurrence of floods and lodging of crops in some regions due to strong gusts of wind. However, the extent of losses due to lodging will depend on the stage of crop development, with minor or insignificant damage expected in areas in the early stages of growth.

According to the Rio Grandense Rice Institute (IRGA), the cultivated area in the state is estimated at 900,203 hectares, while the average productivity is projected at 8,325 kg/ha, according to data from Emater/RS-Ascar.

As for marketing, the weekly price survey carried out by Emater/RS-Ascar indicates a 3.08% reduction in the value of a bag of rice in the state. The price, which was previously R$102.52, increased to R$99.36 per 50-kilo bag.
