Civil registration statistics for 2022 indicate that, in Greater Vitória, the rate exceeds 72% of cases of couple separation

For the first time, more than half of divorces in Espírito Santo involved shared custody of minor children. This division of responsibilities in child custody jumped from 45.6%, in 2021, to 51.3%, in 2022, in the State, according to civil registry data, released this Wednesday (28) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The rate recorded in the State is higher than that in Brazil, where the percentage increased from 34.5% to 37.8% in the same period.

The percentage of divorces in which women are responsible for the custody of minor children fell from 48%, in 2021, to 43.1%, in 2022, in Espírito Santo. Fathers assume custody in 3.1% of cases.

Data from IBGE indicate that, in 2022, in Espírito Santo, in 1,448 divorces, both spouses were responsible for custody of the children. Women were responsible for children in 1,217 cases and men in 88, in the dissolution of marriages.

When analyzing the data from Greater Vitória and the city of Vitória, the number of divorces with shared custody was even higher in 2022. In the Capital, 84% of children were under the responsibility of both parents. In the metropolitan region, this rate was 72%.

Same-sex marriage increases by 34.7%

The IBGE also released other data, such as the increase in the number of same-sex marriages. In 2022, 23,209 unions of this type were registered in Espírito Santo, which represented an increase of 0.4% (89 more marriages, in absolute numbers) in relation to 2021. In Brazil, the number of these marriages increased by 4% in the same period, corresponding to 37,539 more unions than in 2021.

Different-sex marriages increased by 0.2% between 2021 and 2022, from 22,976 to 23,015. The number of same-sex marriages increased by 34.7% in the same period. Among same-sex spouses, there were 194 marriage registrations in the State in 2022 (0.8% of total marriages), 82 (42.3%) between male spouses and 112 (57.7%) between female spouses.

In marriages between people of different sex, unions between single spouses predominated, accounting for 65.3% (15,038) of the total number of legal unions. In marriages between same-sex spouses, there was also a predominance of unions between single people, both among male (72%) and female (73.2%) couples.

In Espírito Santo, in 2022, the average duration of marriages that ended in divorce, between spouses of different sex, was 13.4 years. The average age of men at divorce is 44.2 years, while that of women is 41.1 years.

This information is part of the Civil Registry Statistics, which investigate records of births, marriages, deaths and fetal deaths reported by the Civil Registry Offices of Natural Persons, as well as divorces declared by the Family Courts, Forums, Civil Courts and Notary Offices from across the country.
