Federal Highway Police

The Federal Highway Police (PRF) begins Operation Holy Week today (28), which aims to reinforce inspection and also raise awareness among drivers on the federal highways of Mato Grosso do Sul. The operation continues until next Sunday (31).

During the action, around 600 federal highway police officers will be working to combat traffic violations, assist with accidents, assist citizens and also combat crime.

The focal points in inspections are speeding, cell phone use, improper overtaking, alcohol levels, failure to use seat belts and devices for transporting minors.

Guidelines for those going on the road:

● Before traveling, the vehicle owner must check the condition of the car. Maintenance must be up to date, especially in relation to safety items, such as braking systems, tires and lighting and signaling systems.

● The trip must be planned so that the driver avoids driving the vehicle for more than four uninterrupted hours. He must be rested and in physical and psychological condition to drive.

● The driver must respect the maximum passenger capacity allowed by the manufacturer. All occupants must wear a seat belt or, in the case of children, an equivalent restraint system (car seats, booster seats, etc.) properly secured to the vehicle.

● Luggage must be carried in a separate compartment, to avoid injuries if involved in accidents. If they are carried in the passenger compartment, they can move and injure the car’s occupants. Drivers must respect signage, the maximum speed established for the road and, in relation to overtaking, perform the maneuver only in permitted locations and when there is time and distance to complete the maneuver without putting traffic at risk. It is noteworthy that poorly carried out overtaking is responsible for a third of deaths on federal highways.

● In case of rain, speed must be reduced, headlights must remain on and the safety distance between vehicles must increase.
