Have you noticed that weddings are becoming less frequent in Rio Grande do Sul? According to data from the 2022 Census, the number of marriage registrations has declined over the past decade in the state.

In 2010, for every 1,000 inhabitants of Rio Grande do Sul, there were 4.5 wedding celebrations. However, this number has dropped to 4.2 marriages per 1,000 people currently, as pointed out by IBGE. This rate is only higher than that of Piauí, which records 3.4 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants. Comparatively, the national average is 5.9 marriages per 1,000 residents.

In relation to same-sex marriages, Rio Grande do Sul registered 437 of these unions in 2022, representing 1.2% of the total. Of these, the majority (almost two thirds) were among women.

Another fact that draws attention in the state is the number of divorces. In 2022 alone, 14,200 divorces were recorded. Furthermore, Gauchos have the highest average age for divorce in the country: men are around 46 years old and women, around 43 years old, when they decide to end their marriage. In comparison, the national average is 44 years for men and 41 years for women.

Furthermore, couples from Rio Grande do Sul are also the ones who take the longest to make their divorce official after the wedding date. On average, it takes 16.8 years between marriage and the formalization of divorce in the state, which represents the longest duration in all of Brazil.
