With the expectation of an increase in the flow of vehicles during the Holy Week holiday, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) announced an increase in operations and policing on federal highways in Rio Grande do Sul. Operation Holy Week 2024 will begin at midnight. night of March 28th and will last until 11:59 pm on March 31st, aiming to promote road safety and reduce the risk of accidents.
During the period, the PRF will increase the number of police officers on duty and intensify operational actions, with a special focus on combating drunk driving. Inspections will be directed to places and times with a higher incidence of accidents, prioritizing infractions that pose greater risks, such as improper overtaking and driving under the influence of alcohol.
In addition, crime-fighting actions will be reinforced, with the aim of arresting criminals, recovering stolen vehicles and removing illegal weapons and drugs from circulation. The expectation is that there will be an increase in movement on the federal highways of Rio Grande do Sul, especially those that connect the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre to the north coast of Rio Grande do Sul (BRs 290 and 101).
To avoid congestion, the PRF recommends that drivers plan their trips for off-peak days and times:
- Departure: Thursday (28) at noon; Saturday (30) in the morning.
- Return: until noon on Sunday (31).
There will be traffic restrictions for vehicles with excess dimensions or weights on certain days and times. PRF guidelines for a safe trip include checking the documentation and condition of the vehicle before traveling, respecting traffic laws, avoiding using a cell phone while driving and obeying agents’ orders in the event of a police approach.
In the event of an accident without injuries, those involved must remove their vehicles from the road and register the incident online. If there are injuries, it is important to signal the location and call the PRF by calling 191.
