Agnes Montagna, 74, “was always very active, she always traveled everywhere”, described her grandson Patrick Montagna. He declared that the family is in shock over her death, as she was run over by an ambulance while crossing the street at a pedestrian crossing in Blumenau, in Vale do Itajaí, Santa Catarina.

“Always weeding, planting and taking very good care of his son with Down syndrome”, he says.

The collision happened on Monday (25). The woman was taken to Hospital Santa Isabel, in the same municipality, but she died on Wednesday morning (27).

The ambulance was from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu). A video captured the accident.

“The Secretariat regrets what happened and takes the opportunity to announce that it is taking all necessary measures to clarify the causes and circumstances of this accident, in addition to expressing all its solidarity with the victim’s family and the ambulance team involved, who are shaken by what happened” , informed the Health Promotion Secretariat in a note.

The victim’s family only found out about the accident in the early hours of Tuesday (26), when Patrick noticed that she was not at home and called her cell phone. According to the grandson, a hospital team informed him about the accident.

“She always helped her son-in-law on his farm, there in Luiz Alves [no Vale do Itajaí], always weeding, planting and taking very good care of her son with Down syndrome. She was a very caring grandmother,” she said.

She lived in Vitor Meireles, in the same region, but moved because of her son, who is 35 years old. “Around that date, 35 years ago, they came to Blumenau, to have more resources, to take care of the boy.”

The elderly woman worked as a cleaner, in addition to providing services in some stores in the city.

Agnes’ wake takes place at the Jardim da Saudade Cemetery, in the Fortaleza neighborhood. The burial is scheduled for 11am this Thursday (28).

What the city of Blumenau said

Blumenau City Hall, through the Health Promotion Secretariat (Semus), confirms an accident involving a Samu ambulance on the afternoon of Monday, the 25th. When moving urgently to respond to an incident, the vehicle ended up running over a pedestrian crossing the safety lane on Avenida Martin Luther, around 4pm. The Samu team provided first aid at the scene and the victim was taken to Hospital Santa Isabel (HSI) by the advanced life support ambulance (USA).

Semus informs that the safety of pedestrians, patients and emergency teams has always been a priority and this eventuality occurred even with the light and sound signals turned on. The Secretariat regrets what happened and takes the opportunity to announce that it is taking all necessary measures to clarify the causes and circumstances of this accident, in addition to expressing all its solidarity with the victim’s family and the ambulance team involved, who are shaken by what happened.
