Info Bahia 2024 was released this Tuesday (26) by the Superintendency of Economic and Social Studies of Bahia (SEI). The work presents annually, in an accessible way, infographics that summarize the main data and information about the state. The most current data indicates that, in 2022, the population of Bahia totaled 14.1 million inhabitants.

According to Info Bahia 2024, almost half of this population was concentrated in 18 municipalities in the state, even with a territorial extension of 564.7 thousand km². The population of Bahia is made up mostly of women (93.6 men for every 100 women), adults (42.0% are between 30 and 59 years old, regardless of sex) and black people (57.3% are mixed race and black 22.4% of the total population).

This compendium of the state’s socioeconomic data has been created since 2018 with the purpose of presenting an overview of Bahia that is easy to view for the general public. The main data sources are the bases of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), such as the 2022 Demographic Census and the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD-C), in addition to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) base. municipal and state, a partnership between SEI and IBGE. The information is presented in four dimensions: demographics; economy; foreign trade and labor market.

In terms of wealth generation, in 2021, Bahia’s GDP was R$352.6 billion (7th economy in Brazil), which was equivalent to 3.9% of the national GDP and 28.4% of the GDP of the Northeast Region . All this wealth generated was divided into different shares between the three major economic sectors: Agriculture (11.1% of total GDP), Industry (24.9%) and Commerce and Services (64.0%).

Among the highlighted activities, by major sectors, are: grain production in western Bahia (soybeans equivalent to 5.0% of national production; cotton, 22.0% of national production; corn, 2.3% of national production) ; the manufacturing industry around the Metropolitan Region of Salvador (oil refining, 6.4% of national production; chemicals, 9.2% of national production); and commerce – spread across the state’s municipalities.

Among exports, Bahia is the 10th state in export value. In 2023, there were 11.3 billion dollars in export value. This was equivalent to 3.3% of national exports and 45.4% of exports from the Northeast Region. The main segments exported by Bahia are: soybeans – US$ 3.1 billion; oil and derivatives – US$ 2.4 billion; paper and cellulose – US$ 1.2 billion. And among the main destinations are: China (28.4% in export value), Singapore (11.4%) and the United States (7.7%).
