The State Department of Traffic (Detran-PB), in partnership with the Section of the Brazilian Bar Association in Paraíba, Federal Highway Police (PRF-PB) and the Executive Secretariat for Urban Mobility (Semob-João Pessoa) closed, this Tuesday, fair (26), the 1st Women in Traffic Symposium, in the OAB auditorium, in Campina Grande.

The latest edition of the project that celebrated the month dedicated to women brought to light the debate surrounding the occupation of women’s spaces, including in traffic, when the safe and responsible behavior of vehicle drivers on state and federal roads and highways was noted.

The event was attended by the superintendent of Detran-PB, Isaías Gualberto; the Director of Operations, Roberta Neiva; the Traffic Education coordinator, Ariana Nogueira; the head of the 1st Ciretran, Renato Maracajá, the president of the OAB Special Traffic Commission, Giordana Coutinho, as well as representatives from the PRF, Semob-João Pessoa, Public Ministry, Civil Police, Legislative Assembly of Paraíba, Campina Grande City Council, Superintendency of Traffic and Public Transport (STTP Campina Grande), employees of the entities and bodies involved and students from the Félix Araújo State School, based in that municipality.

During the symposium, superintendent Isaías Gualberto lamented the high rate of traffic deaths. “In Brazil, traffic accidents kill more people than cancer and, for the most part, occur due to the recklessness of drivers, especially male motorcyclists”.

The closing edition of the 1st Women in Traffic Symposium was enriched by a talk by the director of Operations at Detran-PB. Under the theme “Safe traffic: challenge for many”, Roberta Neiva spoke about the role of women in all spaces, but on an equal basis with men. “We are 6 million more women than men and we die 20% less than men”, she pointed out.

She spoke about racial segregation and illustrated it with Martin Luther King’s dream for equality to talk about hope and the future, related to the great challenge of containing traffic accidents and deaths. “In the first Decade of Action for Traffic Safety, from 2010 to 2019, established by the UN, the target would be a 50% reduction in accidents, but in Brazil it increased and 150% of this increase involved motorcyclists”.

For the second Decade of Action for Traffic Safety, from 2020 to 2030, a new target of a 50% reduction appears. For speaker Roberta Neiva, it is necessary to invest in integrated actions, through campaigns for peace in traffic, municipal committees and the actions and statistics of the National Plan for the Reduction of Deaths and Injuries in Traffic (Pnatrans).

She also highlighted the fundamental role of Education and the Yellow May campaigns on the theme “Peace in traffic starts with you”. For Roberta Neiva, we need to work to ensure that everyone returns home safely and in peace.

He concluded by highlighting the importance of the event. “This symposium is to talk about women and value the women who are close to us and who make a difference.”

During the month of March, Detran-PB began a series of symposia alluding to women in traffic, covering the five regions of the State. The first took place in the municipality of Patos, followed by Cajazeiras, Guarabira, João Pessoa and Campina Grande.
