From April 1st, several foods will increase in price Rio Grande do Sulwhen the tax benefit cuts defined by the state government. Foods such as bananas, tomatoes and eggs can cost up to 13.64%, with the new tax rate. The executive justifies the higher tax burden due to the need to increase revenue to improve the “challenging” economic situation in which RS finds itself.
According to a technical note released by the Rio Grande do Sul Finance Department (Sefaz), fruit and vegetable products will experience the greatest variation, costing 13.64% more, followed by meat, 5.68%, and Rice, 4.5%. As an example, the note provides information that a kilo of tomatoes will cost R$10.22, compared to the R$8.99 it costs today.

Also according to Sefaz, the price variation is due to the higher amounts charged in ICMS. Several foods that were discounted 7% or less will now pay an effective tariff of 12% of their price in this tax. In this case, products such as rice, beans, meat, wheat flour, sugar, coffee, UHT milk, fruit and vegetables, eggs, bread, among others, are included.
