Amazonas recorded a drop in the number of births and deaths, points out IBGE. The State also had the second highest percentage of late birth registrations in the country.

In 2022, Amazonas recorded 67,714 births and 18,275 deaths. The numbers indicate a 4.4% reduction in the number of births, compared to 2021. The number of deaths also reduced between 2020 and 2021, although it did not return to pre-pandemic levels. The capital and interior municipalities recorded a high percentage of violent deaths, which raises the rate to the national average. The data comes from the 2022 Civil Registration Statistics survey, released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics – IBGE.
According to the head of Dissemination at IBGE Amazonas, Luan Rezende, the State has the second highest percentage of late birth records in the country.
In comparison with other Federation Units, Amazonas ranked 15th in terms of the drop in births. The first state with the biggest reduction was Paraíba, with 9.9%; and the State with the smallest decrease in the number of births was Santa Catarina, with 2.0%. Also according to Luan Rezende, Amazonas recorded, in 2022, a total of 14,093 marriages, maintaining the average of recent years.
Regarding divorces, Amazonas registered 5,479 actions in 2022.
