The number of births in the Federal District registered a drop for the fifth consecutive year in 2022. The data is from the Civil Registry Statistics survey, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), released this Wednesday (27/3).

The last time there was an increase in the number of births in the capital, from one year to the next, was in 2017.

The survey is based on records in DF registry offices. In the last year analyzed, 2022, there were 36,042 births, representing a drop of 5.3% compared to 2021.

Per month, the DF has an average of 2,989.7 child births, with March being the period with the most registered babies: 3,360. September was the month with the lowest number of births (2,656).

Women living in the capital have also become pregnant later. The number of births to children with mothers between 20 and 29 years old increased from 50.2% in 2010 to 43.2% in 2022.

The number of mothers who had children after the age of 40 grew considerably. This age group represented just 2.8% of child birth records in 2010, a percentage that rose to 6.7% in 2022.
