The Civil Police arrested, this Tuesday morning (26), two suspects of being part of a gang that sells cloned and stolen cars in Rio de Janeiro.

It is estimated that the criminal organization has profited R$1 million from the scams.

The targets were arrested in the act in possession of illegal vehicles in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in the west of the capital, and in Duque de Caxias, in Baixada Fluminense. Two other men had been arrested previously.

Agents from the MPRJ (Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro) and the DRFA (Robbery and Auto Theft Police Station) carried out five search and seizure warrants issued by the 29th Criminal Court. The court also ordered the freezing of the defendants’ assets.

According to investigations, criminals acted through advertisements published on internet sales platforms.

The victims were lured and contacted the advertiser to obtain information regarding the purchase and sale of the car.

After closing the deal, interested parties were taken to registry offices. Upon arriving at the location, the scammers presented falsified documents, manuals and invoices.

In an interview with RECORDdelegate Alan Duarte, responsible for the case, said that, in one of the cases, a buyer began to receive charges for a fast toll crossing device and had fines assigned in places where he did not travel.

Investigations continue to identify other people involved in criminal activity.
