The Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Norte (MPRN) launched the “Gol Contra” operation this Tuesday, which investigates the existence of an alleged scheme to manipulate results in football games. Search and seizure warrants were executed in the cities of Ceará-Mirim, in RN, and also in Rio Branco, in Acre. According to the MPRN, “to date, at least six people are suspected of involvement in the alleged scheme.”
According to the MP, the results manipulation scheme was taking place in championships organized by the North-Rio Grande Football Federation, and “there was an arrangement in order to favor certain groups in predatory bets carried out in the so-called ‘bet market'”.
“The MPRN already has evidence that there are bettors who benefit from participating directly or through privileged information; that there are recruiters who offer values to the technical staff of the teams involved to obtain fraudulent results; there are also players who are protagonists on the field; and even possible leaders and/or technicians conniving or involved in the alleged scheme. For the MPRN, there are already strong elements of evidence and concrete external signs capable of pointing out fraud”, highlights the statement.
Crimes against the uncertainty of the sporting result, provided for in the General Sports Law, are investigated, as well as criminal association, provided for in the Penal Code.
The seized material will be analyzed by the MPRN, which is still investigating the possible involvement of other people in the alleged scheme of manipulating football match results.
According to the president of the FNF, José Vanildo da Silva, the suspected manipulation was provided to the entity by a company hired by the Brazilian Football Confederation to monitor possible fraud on betting sites.
