A survey released by the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina (IFSC) showed the variation in food prices in the basic food basket in the first months of 2024 in the State. According to the survey, the value of a dozen eggs and a kilo of beans increased by 23% between January and March. The kilogram of rice and chicken fell.

In addition to eggs and beans, a kilo of sugar also had a 5% increase in value, going from R$4.30 in January to R$4.51 in March. In the same vein, a liter of milk went from R$3.58 in the first month of the year to R$3.99 this month, which represents a variation of 11.5%.

According to Edmundo Pozes, professor at IFSC, the 23% increase in the price of a dozen eggs and a kilo of beans is due to the increase in exports in Brazil. According to him, the production volume ends up causing a higher cost for the consumer.

The variation in the price of milk, according to the professor, occurs due to the seasonal effect of the market. The product should increase during the winter and decrease in value in the following seasons. Furthermore, excessive rain in the southern region of Brazil and drought in other producing regions caused the price of beans to increase.
The forecast is that the price of rice, which rose in November and fell in the following months, will become more affordable for consumers. The drop in the value of a kilo of chicken is due to lower demand for the product at the beginning of the year, explains the professor.
