In a demonstration of commitment to animal welfare and public health, the State University of Ceará (Uece) promoted an anti-parasitic collaring action for abandoned dogs on the Itaperi campus. The initiative, carried out in partnership with the Animal Welfare Support Group (GABA), the Animal Protection Secretariat (SEPA) and the Instituto Centro de Ensino Tecnológico (Centec) aims to reduce the risks of disease transmission and ensure safety animals and the academic community.

The “Management Committee for Coexistence with Dogs and Cats in a State of Abandonment on the Itaperi Campus”, created by Resolution no. 1191/2015 – CONSU, plays a fundamental role in this process. With actions aimed at birth control, encouraging adoption and educational campaigns, the Committee seeks to address the problem of animal abandonment, considered an environmental crime according to Federal Law No. 9,605/98.

Antiparasitic collaring of dogs is a preventive measure that contributes to the health of animals and to reducing the risk of transmission of diseases, such as Leishmaniasis, a zoonosis of extreme relevance at national level. It is estimated that around 40 animals currently live in an abandoned situation on campus, and the action taken aims to improve the quality of life of these animals and promote a safer environment for the entire university community.

The activity, which had the support of the Uece rectory, was coordinated by professor Isaac Neto and the Animal Welfare Support Group (GABA). Volunteers collaborated on logistics with the animals, ensuring that collaring was carried out safely and efficiently.

Professor Isaac Neto highlights the importance of this joint action: “The Animal Welfare Support Group (Gaba) was an initiative by Uece teachers and students to help animals living on campus. The rectory, together with the Faculty of Veterinary, created the management committee for abandoned animals, and now, together with the Department of Animal Protection and Centec, we carry out this action in favor of the quality of life of these dogs”.
