Salvador will host the 1st Salvadoran Medicinal Cannabis Forum

A medicine with the potential to save lives, but which is still expensive and subject to prejudice. It is to face this reality that Salvador hosts the 1st Soteropolitano Medicinal Cannabis Forum.

The event will take place on May 6th, at 9 am, in the amphitheater of the Professor Edgard Santos University Hospital (Hupes) of the Federal University of Bahia (Ufba). Registration is free.

With the theme “Scientific advances in Medicinal Cannabis and the transformation of patients’ lives”, the forum will feature debates with authorities in the field, such as neuropediatricians and neurologists, as well as reports from family members and patients who use medicinal cannabis to treat rare syndromes, neurological disorders, among other conditions.

The event is organized by councilor André Fraga (PV) with the support of Hupes, Association for Research and Development of Medicinal Cannabis in Brazil (Cannab) and Municipal Health Department (SMS).

The opening table of the event will be attended by Leandro Stelitano, founder and president of Cannab; José Valber Lima Meneses, superintendent of Hupes; Silvino Gonçalves, Hupes patient; in addition to councilor André Fraga. He is the author of Law 9,663/2023, which authorizes the free distribution of Cannabis-based medicines by the Unified Health System (SUS).

The law was sanctioned in March last year by Mayor Bruno Reis (UB) and, shortly after, a commission was created to prepare the technical instructions relating to the new legislation, which is being implemented.

“The forum will be an opportunity for doctors, researchers and civil society to develop ideas and strengthen relationships that are important to the topic. Several studies point to the effectiveness of medicinal cannabis in treating various diseases. We need to use it for those in need and the forum will support the cause”, said Fraga.

The parliamentarian is also the author of the Indication Project (PIN) 246/2023, which calls for a course on the endocannabinoid system at the Faculty of Medicine of Ufba (FMB-Ufba).
