HPV vaccine will have a single dose; understand what it’s like in SC

Vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV) in the Unified Health System (SUS) will now be carried out in just one dose. The change comes into effect this Tuesday (2), and Santa Catarina must follow the recommendation. Until then, vaccination was carried out in two doses.

— As of publication, people who received one dose are already fully vaccinated and will not need to receive the second — reinforced the director of the National Immunization Program at the Ministry of Health, Eder Gatti.

The vaccine used in the new scheme on the public network remains the quadrivalent immunizer from the Butantan Institute. It protects against four subtypes of HPV associated with cervical cancer.

Children and adolescents aged between 9 and 14 years who received only one dose of the HPV vaccine will be classified by the Ministry of Health, from now on, as fully vaccinated, according to the director of the National Immunization Program of the Ministry of Health , Eder Gatti.

Vaccination coverage in Santa Catarina

There are more than 200 types of HPV, but four of them are the most common and cause the vast majority of diseases related to the infection, which can cause everything from warts to cancer. HPV types 16 and 18 are responsible for 70% of cervical cancer cases; types 6 and 11 for 90% of anogenital warts.

In Santa Catarina, vaccination coverage is higher among women:

Male: 65.2%
Female: 81.24%

Vaccination target audience

The vaccine is available, through SUS, for:

Girls and boys aged 9 to 14;
Women and men living with HIV, solid organ transplants, bone marrow transplants or cancer patients aged 9 to 45 years.

Minors do not require authorization or supervision from their parents at health centers. You must present an identification document or vaccination card.
