Rio had almost 100 thousand cases of dengue and 7 deaths in 2024. “It’s always a concern, but we see the epidemiological panorama changing completely in the last two weeks,” said Soranz.

The secretary also highlighted that, despite the high number of cases, the fatality rate was low, and asked parents to take advantage of the last week of dengue vaccination in the city. The campaign runs until April 6, and, according to Soranz, more than 100,000 children have been vaccinated so far.

Care to prevent the proliferation of Aedes aegypti must continue. The municipal secretariat recommends emptying containers with accumulated stagnant water, filling plant pots with sand and cleaning drains and gutters.

The city declared a state of emergency due to dengue on February 5th. At the time, the city broke a record for the number of hospitalizations due to the disease.

WHO warned yesterday that dengue outbreak in the Americas could be the “worst in history”. As of Tuesday (26), more than 3.5 million cases and a thousand deaths had been recorded on the continent, with Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina presenting the most worrying scenarios.
