Treatment

When the bacteria that causes the problem is identified, the main form of treatment is the use of antibiotics — in addition to, of course, maintaining oral hydration. However, when the patient frequently has episodes of urinary tract infections, a specific investigation with a healthcare professional is necessary: the cause may range from low immunity to menopause.

Using medicines without medical advice is dangerous

Some women suffer from the problem so frequently that they already have in mind which medicine to take. One of the most common is Pyridium, which has phenazopyridine as its active ingredient and is also indicated to alleviate discomfort after surgery, examination or trauma that irritates the mucosa of the lower urinary tract.

However, the medicine has analgesic and not antibiotic action — it works to eliminate pain, but does not cure the infection. If not used together with antibiotics, the drug can even disguise the severity of the problem.

Furthermore, anyone who has a history of liver disease or kidney failure cannot take the medicine without medical advice. Diabetics or people with other chronic health problems should always have professional supervision when taking the medicine and pay attention to the body’s response.
