It’s the end of an era for The Simpsons. Although the animation created by Matt Groening is still far from saying goodbye, this week, the production said goodbye to one of the first secondary characters to appear in the channel’s series FOX: Larry Dalrymple.

In the 15th episode of the 35th season, “Cremains of the Day” (a title that parodies Remains of the Dayfilm starring Anthony Hopkins who arrived in Brazil as Traces of the Day), shown last Sunday, 21st, in the United States, Larry dies suddenly at Moe’s Tavern. With that, Homer, Moe, Carl and Lenny attend his funeral to honor their friend.

However, the incident leads Homer to question whether he and his friends are bad people, as they realize they knew very little about their companion, despite spending so much time with him. The group’s guilt only increases when, at the funeral, Larry’s mother claims that her son used to often talk about his “best friends” from Moe’s Tavern.

The episode also reveals the character’s last name, Delrymple.

Although he was a secondary character, Larry was an “extra” present in the animated series since the first season, which made him one of the main faces in the Moe’s Tavern environment among fans.

Other deaths on ‘The Simpsons’

During the long history of animation, many characters met their end – some tragically, others more naturally. However, the reasons for their departures vary.

Professor Edna Krabbapel, for example, passed away in the 32nd season, in 2021. Her death is directly linked to that of her voice actress, Marcia Wallace, who died in 2013. However, the character’s death was postponed, as the series’ creators felt that she deserved a proper – and thoughtful – send-off.

Another example is that of Mona Simpson, Homer’s mother, who said goodbye to the series in the 19th season, in 2008. According to the creators, it was necessary to end the participation of the character voiced by the actress Glenn Close to give Homer a sense of “closure”, as the plots involving the mother and son revolved around parental abandonment – Homer was abandoned by his mother as a child.

In Brazil, the Star+ has 34 seasons of The Simpsons in the catalog – the current year, the 35th, is not yet expected to reach the platform.
