The new public competition to hire 1,197 professionals to work in development and social assistance policy has already been authorized by the local government, announces the Secretary of Social Development, Ana Paula Marra. In interviews with journalists Adriana Bernardes and Samanta Sallum, on the CB.Poder program — a partnership between Mail and TV Brasília — yesterday, the secretary spoke about the expansion from 862 to 2 thousand places in shelters for homeless people in the Federal District.

The secretariat has enough staff to handle the volume of demands you receive?

I think we still need a better structure. When I talk about this, I inform you that a new competition for development and social assistance policy has just been authorized. There will be 1,197 vacancies in this new competition and I cannot help but remember that when we took over management in 2019, we carried out major career structuring. It had around 1,000 servers and today we have around 2,000.

When will the competition be?

We are currently creating a selection and organization committee for the event. I believe that we will have the notice released this year.

And how are registrations in the Single Registry?

We had the biggest update and registration in the Single Registry of Brazil. The Federal District occupies first place in the national ranking for updating registrations.

What does it mean to be first in Brazil in this ranking?

The Single Registry is the federal government’s database for the government’s social policies and several others, such as housing policies. It can only be praised, as it is done very carefully, we have a Single Registry of reference for other countries. When I say it’s positive, it means that people are gaining access to our Cras. You have to update your registration every two years and, often, government bureaucracy prevents that person from being able to update it. We have almost 400 thousand people in the Federal District’s Single Registry.

We have news that Community Restaurants will start offering a service for these people. Could you explain?

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown, we have provided meals via lunch box in all community restaurants, so as not to have crowds of people. Each person took their lunch box and left, without the meal limit established by the secretariat. It was at this time that we thought about providing free lunches for homeless people. This continues to this day, as we see the consequences of the pandemic and maintain the issue of homeless people being able to eat for free at restaurants. What is the new? Governor Ibaneis Rocha (MDB) decreed that now it’s not just lunch, we will have free breakfast, lunch and dinner for people living on the streets. I can tell you that, starting next week, this decree will begin to be applied in practice in our 16 community restaurants.

Could you explain the increase from 862 to 2 thousand places in shelters for homeless adults and families?

The week before last, we launched a call for 2,000 vacancies for homeless adults and families. This is the biggest increase we have had in the history of reception vacancies. We are taking a very advanced step to expand these vacancies. When you go to these institutions, you will have a reference address, there we prepare CVs and there is social assistance with psychological care. It is to develop a minimum autonomy so that they feel capable of entering the job market.

Today in the DF, there are 2,938 people living on the streets. Is this number reliable?

The next survey will be carried out at the end of the year and we will be able to update this data, as it is the best way to propose public policies having concrete data on this population.

Finally, could you summarize what tomorrow’s public hearing will be like?

Today (7/5), from 10 am until 12 pm, there will be a public hearing in which all social entities interested in participating in our notice to welcome homeless people and also overnight stays can ask questions. Let’s clarify point by point what is in the notice, as I think that the greater the participation, the better the service. The link to participate is available on our social networks.
