Since the start of vaccination against Covid-19 in Maceió, in 2021, the capital has achieved good vaccination rates against the disease, and is even considered the capital that vaccinates the most in Brazil. This success occurred thanks to innovative initiatives such as vaccine drive thrus in various parts of the city, mobile points in high-traffic locations such as shopping malls and beaches, and the vaccination bus that traveled to different neighborhoods bringing immunization to the population.

The picture of this is that 72.17% of the adult population of Maceió is fully immunized against the disease. However, another audience is of concern, which are children aged 6 months to under 5 years (4 years, 11 months and 29 days), who throughout the duration of the campaign, which started in 2023 for this audience, reached only 1.85 % complete immunization. Of these, only 16.81% took the first dose and 8.34% the second. The Ministry of Health’s goal is to vaccinate at least 90% of children of this age, which corresponds to 52,023.

Regarding cases, according to the latest Monthly Bulletin of Covid-19 Cases in Maceió, 630 cases of Covid-19 were recorded in children under one year old and 2,899 cases in the age group from 1 to 9 years old, in 2024 .

Maceió’s Health Secretary, Luiz Romero Farias, views the scenario with concern. “Vaccination against Covid-19 is effective and is applied with the aim of preventing serious infections, hospitalizations, complications and deaths resulting from the disease. Therefore, we call on all fathers, mothers and guardians to take their children to a vaccination point to guarantee their dose and reinforce their protection. Vaccines save lives”, he reinforces.

Children aged 6 months to under 5 years (4 years, 11 months and 29 days) must take the Pfizer Pediátrica (Baby) vaccine in a vaccination schedule consisting of three doses. To begin with this population, the first dose must be taken at six months, the second at 7 months and the third at nine months. The recommended interval is four weeks between the first and second doses and eight weeks between the second and third.

Required documentation

To vaccinate this population, children must be accompanied by their parents. If the child is accompanied by another guardian, the father and mother must complete the form. Consent Form for childhood vaccination, which is retained at the time of vaccination + copy of the father’s or mother’s identification document, which will be retained at the time of vaccination.

Guardians must present their own identification document with photo and documentation of the child, which must be ID or Birth Certificate, Vaccination Booklet and CPF or SUS Card.
