PF operation targets irregularities in field hospital for patients with covid-19 in RJ

A Federal Police (PF) begins, on the morning of this Tuesday (26), the Operation Viruslooking irregularities in field hospital for patients with covid-19 in the municipality of Volta Redonda (RJ)during the pandemic. The suspicion is that there have been misappropriation of public funds in a contract worth R$1.6 million.

In total, 40 federal agents carried out 10 search and seizure warrants at homes, companies and offices linked to those involved in the criminal scheme. In addition to Volta Redonda, the actions take place in Barra do Piraí, Paraíba do Sul, Pinheiral, Rio Claro and in the capital

The warrants were issued by the 2nd Federal Court of Volta Redonda, and the Virus operation had the support of the General Comptroller of the Union (CGU).

According to the PF, the investigations began in 2020, based on an anonymous complaint reporting irregularities in the dismissal of tenders relating to the hiring of services for the installation of equipment at the field hospital set up in Volta Redonda.

In addition to the diversion of public funds, the PF identified a series of other frauds in hiring: overpricing, irregular documents, targeting of the object to be contracted, collusion between companies, political agents and civil servants and shell companies, among other practices under investigation.

Suspects may face charges, in addition to bidding crimes, for criminal association, embezzlement and money laundering, with penalties ranging from 2 to 12 years in prison.

Last week, the PF carried out another operationto Janus, targeting fraud and overpricing involving emergency tenders for purchase of equipment to combat covid-19also in RJ. The investigation showed losses of at least R$5 million.
