Last year, the romantic comedy “Everybody But You” made waves on the web. The romantic atmosphere between the protagonists Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, both behind the scenes of the film and on the publicity tour, convinced the public that “something more” had happened between the two. However, in a new interview with the New York Times, released this Tuesday (23), Powell stated that everything was nothing more than a strategy led by Sweeney herself.

In the months leading up to the release of the production, cute clicks that highlighted the chemistry between the actors circulated on social media. During the promo, the co-stars posed cheek-to-cheek as they toured Australia, Powell was seen throwing a smiling Sweeney back into his arms in an Instagram video, and they flirted constantly on red carpets and in interviews.

At a certain point, the media and fans began to speculate whether life was imitating art, and the two were having an affair, especially after the end of Powell’s long-term relationship. However, in the conversation with the NYT, Glen reinforced that all of this was just an act and that the aim was to convince the public to watch the film. Jeez!

“The two things you need to sell in a romantic comedy are fun and chemistry. Sydney and I have so much fun together and have so much effortless chemistry,” stated the actor.

Powell gave full credit to his co-star: “It’s people wanting what’s on screen off screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into that a little bit – and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart”.

Sweeney, in addition to starring in the film, served as executive producer through her company, Fifty-Fifty Films. Thus, the blonde had the “power” to get directly involved in the marketing campaign and decided to apply a strategy that “instigated” the public into believing that they were a real-life couple.

“I was on every call. I was in group text conversations. I was probably keeping everyone in marketing and distribution at Sony up at night because I couldn’t stop coming up with ideas. I wanted to make sure we were actively talking to the audience while promoting this film, because at the end of the day they were the ones who created the entire narrative,” she said.
