SÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) – The Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation, the actor couple’s philanthropic organization, has been in decline since the slap on Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscar ceremony. According to an investigation by the American website Variety, some of the charity fund’s main investors abandoned ship after the episode.
According to the organization’s tax records that Varitey had access to, the NGO’s revenue, which had risen from US$1,760,000 in 2020 to US$2,138,660 in 2021, fell to US$365,870 in 2022, a drop of 83%. Large contributors have stopped contributing to the fund, such as American Airlines, which donated US$76,160 in 2021, and CAA, which gave US$100,000 in the same year.
Also according to the American website, a source close to the NGO said that the actors were ending the activities of the foundation, which they founded in 1996, before the Oscar episode, and prefer to donate the same amount to charitable causes privately.
At the 2022 Oscar ceremony, actor Will Smith got up from his chair and hit comedian Chris Rock, who was on stage and had made a joke with Jada Pinkett Smith, wife of the protagonist of “King Richard”. Afterward, Smith returned to his seat and shouted “get my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.”
Rock had joked about Will Smith’s wife’s appearance, saying she looked like a character from “GI Jane 2” who is bald. Jada Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia, a genetic disease that leads to hair loss.
Minutes after the incident, Will Smith won the Oscar for best actor for “King Richard”. He beat strong competitors like Benedict Cumberbatch, Denzel Washington, Andrew Garfield and Javier Bardem.
Very emotional and crying, he said that his character, Richard Williams, was a “strong defender of his family”, which generated a buzz from the audience. He apologized to the Academy and the nominees around him, saying he wants to be a recipient of love. “Love makes you do crazy things.”
