Physical conditioning for the elderly is a trend in the Brazilian fitness scene

-

Physical conditioning for the elderly emerges as the main trend in the Brazilian fitness scenario for the year 2024. This is what data released by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) indicates.

According to the research, this growing demand reflects not only a change in mentality regarding aging, but also a deeper understanding of the importance of well-being in old age.

According to the delegate of the Physical Education Council of Paraná, Aurélio Alfieri, the recognition of physical fitness for the elderly as a trend highlights the urgent need to promote a culture of movement for health and well-being.

Starting a fitness program, however, can present specific challenges for older adults, including physical limitations, fear of injury, and lack of motivation. “To overcome these obstacles, it is essential to personalize exercise programs and integrate low-intensity, short-duration activities,” says Aurélio.

A survey launched on social media with 5,700 people showed that 64% of respondents found it more difficult to exercise when they reached this age and that, therefore, they needed exercises that were more adapted to them.

Benefits of Physical Fitness for Seniors

Fitness for seniors offers a wide range of benefits that encompass not only physical health but also mental and emotional health.

These activities not only help maintain muscle strength and flexibility, but also contribute to improved cognitive function and reduced depression.

“In the case of the elderly, we must create routines that take into account their specific limitations and needs, ensuring safe and effective exercises.”

Regarding the impact on the quality of life and independence of the elderly, Alfieri emphasizes that physical conditioning plays a fundamental role: “It contributes to greater autonomy in daily activities and reduces dependence on others”, he highlights.

“The principle that ‘every step counts’ should be a central pillar in the education and practice of fitness professionals when working with older adults.”

Future perspectives on physical fitness for the elderly

Looking to the future, Alfieri envisions a more integrated and personalized approach to the field of fitness for seniors.

He highlights the emergence of trends such as “Nano Workouts” and “Exercise Snacks”, which are approaches that aim to integrate physical activities into the daily routine quickly and conveniently, bringing flexibility and adaptability and making exercise more accessible.

As a delegate to the Physical Education Council, Aurélio emphasizes that in order to adapt to these new demands, it is essential that fitness and health professionals continue to educate and innovate, creating increasingly personalized and accessible programs.

That’s because fitness for seniors is not just a momentary trend, but rather a reflection of a broader cultural shift regarding aging and health.

“With an individual-centered approach and the integration of physical activities into everyday life, we can not only prolong life, but also enrich the years lived, promoting a healthier and more inclusive society for all ages”, he concludes.
