BYD’s first pickup truck, the Shark will be presented on May 14, in Mexico. The model has already had some data revealed by the manufacturer and has been spotted on several occasions, including without camouflage, but its official debut will take place next week. After a few months, most likely in August, Shark should arrive in Brazil to compete in the midsize segment. Its greatest asset will be the plug-in hybrid package with flex technology.

For now, there are not many details, but it is already known that BYD Shark will have the DMO platform for hybrid vehicles with 4×4 drive. At its debut, the set will have a 139 hp 1.5 turbo engine combined with two other electric vehicles, installed one on each axle, to deliver around 480 hp. In Brazil, the propellant must be converted to also use ethanol, but there is a possibility that the Shark will initially be launched using only gasoline.

Another point that promises to impress is autonomy. The Chinese truck will have around 100 km of electric range and will be able to travel approximately 1,000 km in combined mode, according to photos taken of the instrument panel taken in Asia. Furthermore, an electric version is also in the automaker’s plans, but only for 2025.

More details about BYD Shark

At 5.45 meters long, 1.97 m wide and with a wheelbase of 3.26 m, the BYD Shark is a little larger than current medium pickup trucks. The category leader Toyota Hilux, for example, is 5.32 m long, 1.85 m wide and has a wheelbase of 3.08 m. The Ford Ranger measures 5.37 m, 1.92 m and 3.27 m, respectively.

In terms of design, the truck will have rectangular LED headlights and a prominent grille, with a look reminiscent of the Ford F-150. There will also be a bar, also made of LED, connecting the optical assembly, in addition to the brand logo in large letters highlighted on the front. Just like at the front, the lights also cross the entire trunk lid, which bears the BYD name on the bodywork.

As is usual with Chinese cars, the truck will be full of technology. The rotating screen of the multimedia center will be part of the list of standard items, as will a large instrument panel and head-up display. A reversing camera, blind spot sensor, adaptive cruise control and even a 540° panoramic view camera (which combines a 360° surround view with a 180° view of the underside of the chassis) will also be part of the package.

National production

The pickup is one of the candidates for national production in Camaçari (BA). Just like its future main rival, the GWM Poer, another hybrid truck that will also be manufactured in Brazil, in Iracemápolis, in the interior of São Paulo. The rival model will also hit the market later this year.
