Bradesco announced this Thursday, May 9th, the arrival of Túlio Oliveira to head the bank’s digital retail, a relevant move in the strategy outlined by CEO Marcelo Noronha to reinforce senior management with people from outside and, mainly, to digitize the institution.

Oliveira was senior vice-president of finance at Mercado Livre and was also responsible for Mercado Pago in the country for more than nine years. He also has experience with Itaú Unibanco and PayPal.

In addition to him, Bradesco announced the hiring of Silvana Machado to head the human resources area. The executive, who has already taken on the role, was then working in the talent area at Advent. She has worked at consulting companies and global banks, such as Booz-Allen, AT Kearney and Egon Zehnder.

“I think Silvana and Túlio might think differently than most of us about certain topics. They will be important counterpoints and have delivery records”, said Bradesco CEO, Marcelo Noronha, to NeoFeed.

The hiring of people from outside shows the end of the hegemony of the closed career within Bradesco, a paradigm shift within the financial institution in Cidade de Deus.

Oliveira’s arrival, in turn, is a sign that the bank intends to make up for lost time on the digitalization front, following advances by digital banks such as Nubank and Inter.

The situation can be seen in the number of customers gained by these institutions. According to data from the Central Bank (BC), between 2022 and 2023, Nubank’s customer base increased by 17 million and Inter’s by 5.9 million. Bradesco, in turn, grew by 3 million.

The expectation is that the movement will also help in the recovery of profitability, damaged in recent years by the increase in defaults. Bradesco closed the first quarter with a return on average equity (ROAE) of 10.2%, a decrease of 0.4 percentage points in the annual comparison.

On the hiring front, in addition to Oliveira and Machado, Bradesco brought in Julio Guedes, who is already managing the credit portfolio area, in the role of director, and Eduardo Ventura, who came from Citi to be the new head of the ultra high of Bradesco Global Private Bank.
