Several people from Belo Horizonte are present at the Hippie Fair, on Avenida Afonso Pena, in the central region of the capital, this Sunday morning (May 5th) in search of a gift for Mother’s Day. The expectations of the stallholders are high, and they hope to close the day with great results. Many consumers say that they decided to put aside the rush and go shopping more calmly, without leaving everything until the last minute.

A survey by the Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism of Minas Gerais (Fecomércio-MG) shows that Belo Horizonte residents should spend, on average, R$ 189.61 on gifts for Mother’s Day this year. The number represents an increase of 10%, since in 2023 the value was R$172.30. Clothes lead the way when purchasing. Also according to the study, more than half of consumers (53.1%) should give gifts to their mothers.

Cassiane Oliveira, 22 years old, self-employed, took her mother to choose the gift. She says it’s not that easy to please her, but it’s worth it. “As she works during the week, we chose the market to do the shopping. It’s been a long time since we’ve been there, and we’re really enjoying it,” she says.

Cleaning assistant, Cassiane’s mother, Andreia Oliveira, 47 years old, is happy with the date and the opportunity to go shopping with her daughter. “We have to bring the children to benefit us. We are mothers, and we deserve it,” she says.

Chemical engineer Giovanna Leal, 23 years old, says she decided to go shopping this Sunday, a week before Mother’s Day, to avoid commotion. “I was already planning to buy the gift two weeks ago. Plus, it’s also a ride that my mom and I enjoy,” she says.

Market vendor Fabio Camargos, 45 years old, says that sales are growing.

“The outlook is very good for Mother’s Day. I hope it continues like this, with increasing movement. The volume of customers has increased significantly because of the date,” she says.

Market stallholder and digital influencer Aurélia Aparecida, aged 25, is also satisfied with the sales. She reports that people are buying gifts for several women who are mothers.

“Mother’s Day is considered the second Christmas for us. There are many children giving gifts to their mothers, mothers-in-law and other women they know who are also mothers. Expectations are that sales will be very high,” she says.

According to Silvia Piastrelli, 40 years old, who promotes the fair on the Internet, people are looking for everything to give gifts to their mothers. “The movement is excellent. Overcrowded tents. Sales are quite varied. Shoes, clothes, bags… everything is booming”, she says.
