The 307th meeting of the Amazonas Development Council (Codam) approved this Thursday (25) 38 projects for implementation in the Manaus Industrial Pole (PIM), which total investments of R$ 1.28 billion. One of them is that of the Chinese BYD, worth R$154.1 million, to produce 1,500 battery modules for use in electric buses every month.

The head of the State Secretariat for Economic Development, Science, Technology and Innovation (Sedecti), Serafim Corrêa (PSB), who chaired the meeting and represented the Government of Amazonas, highlighted that the project brings about a change in the profile of the bus fleets used in Brazil, producing energy modules for 105 thousand vehicles in a maximum of 70 months, “making a huge contribution to the energy transition”, one of the areas considered strategic by the Federal Government.

“Since the project was presented to the Federal and State governments, there has been sensitivity from both Governor Wilson Lima (União) and President Lula (PT) about its social relevance. At the federal level, I note the commitment of vice-president Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), always alongside the demands of Amazonas, and the minister of Science and Technology, Luciana Santos (PCdoB), who approved the respective PPB, enabling the manufacture of batteries in Manaus,” he said.

Serafim congratulated the company’s representatives on site and said he was “supporting” that at least a thousand of the batteries produced would remain in the city of Manaus to change the profile of the city’s public transport. The investment was celebrated by Wilson Lima on his social networks. The governor recalled that he met with the company’s directors in China “seeking to attract new investments to our state”.

BYD set up shop at PIM in 2017, but only started production in 2020. According to Liza Ribeiro, tax director of the company’s Brazilian subsidiary, the company chose the Manaus Free Trade Zone to “add its sustainability footprint to its brand” .

“We came up with all this innovation to contribute to the environment, because today our modules are electric, we have already left that combustion line. As the secretary himself said, it is an advance in the modal issue of buses, in the collective issue. With this, we reduce both polluting gas emissions and a much more affordable cost-benefit ratio,” he said.

In addition to the BYD project, Codam approved another 37 industrial implementation, diversification and update projects for the PIM. One of them was BioAmazonas, a herbal medicine industry, for the production of solid medicines for human use, with a planned investment of R$358.6 million and the creation of 54 new jobs. Another highlight is the project by the company KTM do Brasil, with an investment of R$97 million, foreseeing the creation of 106 new jobs.

One of the diversification projects approved was by the company MK BR SA for the production of split-type air conditioning units, with an investment of R$73.8 million and the creation of 147 new jobs.
In total, the approved proposals project the creation of 1,069 new jobs over the next three years, in addition to the relocation of 394 employees already allocated to the industry.
