‘Petrobras cannot have exorbitant profits’, says Minister of Mines and Energy

-

The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, declared this Monday, 1st, that it is not possible to admit that the Petrobras make “exorbitant profits”.

In an interview with GloboNews, Silveira declared that Petrobras must have a social role in generating jobs for the population.

“We cannot admit that Petrobras has a single and exclusive objective of making exorbitant profits to be able to distribute to its shareholders”, said the Minister of Mines and Energy. “We want you to make a lot of profit. We want it to be highly competitive. We don’t want to. Let’s work for it. Especially because, the bigger it is, the more competitive it is, the more resources we have to apply to generate jobs, generate income, generate growth.”

Minister denies government interference in Petrobras

Silveira again denied that the government interfered in the command of Petrobras, but said that it was up to the Executive monitor your decisions.

“Now, what we cannot do is stop monitoring, for example, what the Petrobras board of directors is doing from the point of view of fulfilling its investment plan approved by the board of directors,” said Silveira.

The Public Ministry and the Federal Audit Court (TCU) presented a representation in March, to investigate possible undue interference by the Lula government in Petrobras, after the decision not to distribute dividends.

In the request, the MP stated that decisions taken by the company may have been affected by the interests of the federal administration, such as the option not to pay extraordinary dividends to shareholders.

According to prosecutors, decisions taken by Petrobras could have been affected by the interests of the federal administration and not by market logic in management.
