Correios ended 2023 with a loss of R$597 million, according to a report released in the early hours of Thursday (28). The result presents an improvement in the state-owned company’s accounts compared to 2022, when the loss was R$768 million.

According to the balance sheet, Correios’ total revenue in 2023 was R$21.6 billion, which represents a reduction of 1.83% compared to 2022.

The state-owned company reported that revenues in the international segment grew 23.2%, helping to balance the books and cushioning the drop of around 5% in revenues from the delivery of parcels and messages.

Among the factors that contributed to the positive result in the international segment are the growth of foreign e-commerce in Brazil and better efficiency in deliveries.

Furthermore, the Post Office’s total expenses also reduced, going from R$22.8 billion, in 2022, to R$22.2 billion, in 2023. The drop was 2.52%.

In total, the state-owned company invested R$755.4 million in 2023, a reduction of 0.4% compared to the previous year. Among the highlights is the renewal of the fleet, with the acquisition of more than 3 thousand vehicles, 1.7 thousand bicycles with trunks and another 307 electric bicycles.

“This initiative aims to significantly improve the working conditions of postmen, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase productivity and bring savings in operational expenses”, says the report.

Correios also reported that it provided a salary increase and restored benefits that had been cut to employees. According to the report, the total number of employees reached 85,882, which indicates a reduction of almost 2% compared to 2022.

The government had chosen a privatization model that included the sale of 100% of the state-owned company. At the time, there was a forecast of an auction to complete the sale in the 1st half of 2022.

After Lula was elected to a third government, the transition group proposed that the privatization of the state-owned company be discarded.
