Remote work can offer a lot of flexibility. However, it can also pose some risks, especially when the professional takes the computer to a personal appointment, trying to reconcile both aspects. Recently, a video showing a Gen Z employee assisting her boss during a visit to the hairdresser went viral.

The record shows American Lulu Davidson, 21, washing her hair in a beauty salon while making a video call with her manager, Lucinda Bayly, 31, owner of a public relations agency.

The video was posted by the manager herself, with the caption: “That’s not exactly what I meant by ‘flexible work arrangements’”, and has reached more than 2 million views. In the video, she writes: “when you call for your Gen Z assistant on home office day.”

In an interview with Newsweek, Bayly says she called the employee and she answered via Facetime “clearly because her ears were wet and soapy,” she said. “I thought it was hilarious and had a good laugh, and then we got to work.”

The manager, who is in Australia, says she does not prevent her employees from working from home. In fact, she claims that she didn’t care when she discovered that the young employee was at the hairdresser during working hours.

“I didn’t know, and that’s why it was so funny when she answered like that. But she was online, as I was texting and emailing her before that call. For me there are no problems, as long as your tasks are done well and submitted on time,” she says. Bayly even defended the employee, saying that she is “fabulous” and that she is “very grateful” to have her on the team.
