Now it’s law: Government of RJ can create a police station specializing in investigating the deaths of police officers

Governor Cláudio Castro sanctioned, this Wednesday (24/04), Law 10,347/2024, authored by deputy Rosenverg Reis (MDB), which authorizes the Executive Branch to create, in the structure of the Secretariat of State for the Civil Police, or body that may succeed it, the Specialized Police Station for the Investigation of Deaths of Public Security Agents in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The Law was published, this Thursday (25/04), in the Official Gazette.

According to the proposal, the Police Station will be responsible for registering, investigating, opening an investigation and adopting necessary police procedures to defend agents against any type of conduct that puts them at risk, aiming for their effective protection.

“The number of public security agents who have been victims of violent deaths, especially outside of working hours, is impressive. It is not fair for them to live in a permanent state of alert, compromising the time they could spend with their family or on other activities. No agent should be killed for carrying out their role, much less with the frequency that has happened in Rio de Janeiro, the rate of which is considered high even by international criteria”, highlighted the deputy.

According to mapping carried out by the Fogo Cruzado Institute, from January to August 2023, 100 public security agents were shot in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. Of this total, 44 died and 56 were injured. On average, it’s like an officer is shot every two days in the city. In 2022, the number was reached on September 7th. According to the Institute, military police officers – responsible for overt and repressive policing – were the most affected, representing 77% of the officers shot during the period.
