In the last few hours, a video has gone viral in which fish are seen ‘raining’ from the sky in Yasujat the Will, under a sky covered in clouds. It is possible to see considerable-sized fish falling from the sky, and they remain alive even after colliding with the ground.

As strange as it may seem, this is not the first time that this phenomenon has been documented and there is a scientific explanation for its occurrence.

PHENOMENON – In addition to fish, other similar rain events of frogs or other creatures have been documented. These situations are known by meteorologists as fortified rains. It must be clarified that this is not rain in the strict sense of the word, as the fish do not evaporate from the ground or condense in the clouds.

SUCTION – Inside the waterspout, the pressure drops drastically and a suction effect is created, combined with strong upward winds on the walls of the funnel. The weakest waterspouts leave winds exceeding 60 km/h and the most intense ones easily exceed 150 km/h. The Fujita scale categorizes tornadoes into five grades based on the damage caused and the intensity of the winds.

When passing through a shallow lake, a waterspout can suck up not only water but also fish and other lake creatures in its path. The fish are then lifted to a high altitude and moved a certain distance from the lake, generating what we know as ‘fish rain’. Sea creatures can sometimes ride updrafts and freeze at high altitudes.
