A cruise ship arrived at the port of New York, in the United States, with a dead whale stuck in its bow, as reported by maritime authorities cited by the Associated Press (AP) news agency.
The animal, which measured 13 meters in length, was identified as a sei whale, an endangered species. He became trapped on the bow of the MSC Meraviglia as it arrived in Brooklyn Harbor on Saturday, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration spokeswoman Andrea Gomez said.
“The competent authorities were immediately notified and are carrying out examinations on the whale,” officials from cruise company MSC Cruises said in a statement.
The shipping company expressed deep sadness at the loss of any marine life and assured that it complies with regulations to protect whales, including altering itineraries to avoid collisions with the animals.
The whale underwent an autopsy on Tuesday, and samples were taken to determine whether it was alive or dead when it was hit by the ship.
