President Javier Milei mocked the general strike in Argentina called for this Thursday (9) by the CGT trade union against his government’s economic measures, in particular the mega package of reforms that is being discussed in the Senate, after approval by the Chamber.

He took advantage of the photo of when he received a shirt from FIFA president Gianni Infantino this week. In one montage, he wrote on his shirt: “Yo no paro” (“I don’t stop”). Previously, the image only showed his name and number 10.

This is the second general strike that the country has gone through since Milei took power five months ago. According to local media, public transport is severely affected, with few buses available to the population and reports of at least two stone attacks on public buses on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Private schools are open, but many teachers are absent.

Yesterday, Manuel Adorni, presidential spokesman, estimated that the strike should affect more than 6.5 million Argentines. He even called trade unionists “fundamentalists of backwardness”.

The government created a special telephone line (134) to receive reports of “extortion” against anyone who tries to impede the right to work and announced that public employees who join the movement will have their day deducted from their monthly salary.

According to the Clarín newspaper, the forecast is that there will be normal operation of supermarkets, local shops, bars and restaurants, pharmacies and service points. But the transport of goods, fuel and garbage collection will not take place, in addition to postal services, which will be paralyzed.

Industrial activity in its different branches will be restricted while the ports will be completely shut down, which will affect agro-export trade and imports.
