Until the mid-90s, those who consumed milk I had to buy the famous C or B milk by the bag. With the emergence of carton packaging (long life), the bag disappeared – however, in recent years, it has been making a comeback. Class “A” supermarkets in São Paulo, such as Mambo and the Zaffari chain, began selling refrigerated bagged milk again, in 1-liter packages.

Today’s sachet milk is different from that of the past: it no longer has an A or B classification. It is just pasteurized, natural milk, without additives. The shelf life, as long as it is kept refrigerated, is up to ten days and it does not need to be boiled. There is even a launch by Leitíssimo, from the Leite Verde Group, of milk in bags that does not require refrigeration, it is UHT (goes through the high temperature process).

But isn’t the plastic bottle much more practical than the soft bag? For the producer, the bag is cheaper. Bag packaging would also be more sustainable, according to 2021 research by professor Mary Anne White, from Dalhousie University, in Canada. The study compared the amount of plastic in each package and also the use of energy and water and the generation of greenhouse gases in the production of each package.
