Argentina takes the first step towards joining the OECD

Argentina received in Paris, this Thursday, 2, the guidelines for its possible integration into the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The entity brings together the main democratic economies in the world. O Brazil is off the list.

Argentine Chancellor, Diana Mondino, received the document through the Secretary General of the OECD, Mathias Cormann. The delivery takes place during a ceremony held at the organization’s headquarters, in the French capital.

Diana emphasized the significant progress of the process in the last four months. She highlighted that Argentina will establish its policies based on the guidance received.

In 2016, during the administration of former Argentine president Mauricio Macri, the South American country expressed interest in joining the OECD. After six years, the discussion process began together with Brazil, Peru, Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania.

Despite the positive conversations, Argentina was the only one that had not received the document to join the group, under the presidency of Alberto Fernández, according to Diana.

Economic assessments and measures for Argentina’s growth

Now, the OECD will carry out assessments in several areas, such as trade, investment, combating corruption and climate change. The objective is to help Argentina improve its economic growth and the quality of life of its population.

OECD chief economist Clare Lombardelli praised the economic measures adopted by Argentine President Javier Milei, who has been in office since December 2023. The changes include reforms to deregulate the economy and a fiscal package, as well as efforts to reduce inflation.

Clare highlighted the importance of strict fiscal and monetary policy to control inflation. Even though the results take time, the economist emphasized.

Currently, the OECD has the participation of four Latin American countries: Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia and Mexico, among its 38 members. The organization’s members are responsible for around 80% of global trade and investment.
