Republican Donald Trump has said he may not accept the results of the 2024 election in Wisconsin, a crucial state in his race with President Joe Biden for the White House, leaving open the possibility of post-election turmoil.

In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Wednesday, Trump said that if he doesn’t believe the result of the November election was legitimate, “you have to fight for the right of the country.”

Trump added that, “if everything is above board, I will absolutely accept the results.”

The Republican presidential candidate’s comments came after an interview this week with Time magazine, in which Trump did not rule out the possibility of political violence surrounding the election, saying that it “depends on the impartiality” of the process.

In the Sentinel interview, Trump reiterated his baseless claims that he won Wisconsin — a Midwestern state in which he was defeated by Democrat Biden by 21,000 votes in 2020 — and that the election was tainted by fraud. The Trump campaign unsuccessfully tried to disqualify nearly 240,000 votes cast in favor of Biden.

In 2016, Trump had won the race in Wisconsin against Democrat Hillary Clinton. His rematch this year against Biden is expected to be close. This Wednesday, he held rallies in Wisconsin and Michigan, another crucial state.

Trump also said in the newspaper interview that he will not hesitate to raise doubts about the election if he is convinced that there is something wrong with the results.
