Former soldier Rüdiger Wilfred Hans von Pescatore, who lived in Santa Catarina, is in the dock of German justice this week. Despite the apparently peaceful life he led in Indaial, in the Itajaí Valley, he is accused of being part of an extreme right-wing network that planned to overthrow that country’s democratic institutions and take power in a coup d’état.

Pescatore has been imprisoned in Germany since December 2022. At that time, he had two active companies in Santa Catarina. One for business consultancy, based in Pomerode, and one for solar panels, in Blumenau. The former soldier arrived in the region around 2016 accompanied by his family and stayed until mid-2020, when he moved to Paraguay.

In addition to the former resident of Santa Catarina, eight other people are being tried in Stuttgart. According to the g1, all are accused of being part of the so-called “military wing” of a group called “Patriotic Union”. According to the complaint from the German Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, they were even planning an armed invasion of the Bundestag, the German parliament.

What is Pescatore’s involvement?

How NSC Total Blumenau showed at the time of arrest de Pescatore, between 1993 and 1996 he commanded a paratrooper platoon of the German Armed Forces. The former soldier was reportedly dismissed at the time on suspicion of embezzling weapons. After the conspiracy arrest came to light, former battalion colleagues recalled the accusations in a Facebook group.

In the Itajaí Valley, those who had contact with Pescatore’s family found it difficult to believe the story. Except for involvement with conspiracy theories and denialism related to Covid-19 — a common trait among the group’s members, according to the German investigation.

The operation launched by German police in December 2022 was described as the largest in history against extremist groups. Around 3,000 police officers were called to carry out search and arrest warrants. In total, more than 50 people were investigated. Among the detained leaders, in addition to Pescatore, were a descendant of one of the old German monarchies, a former parliamentarian and other former military personnel.
